Sauna: what it is for, the types, the benefits and how to use one

What a sauna actually is, the difference between dry and steam, what the research says about benefits and risks, and how a first session works for beginners.

A sauna is, before any health promise, a hot room. You go in, stay while your body is comfortable, come out to cool down, and rest. In many traditions you repeat that cycle and share the space with other people.

That simple definition clears up two common confusions. A sauna is not a synonym for a spa, because massage and treatment are not required. Nor is it just a cabin for sweating. In the Finnish tradition, the bath includes löyly, the brief wave of steam that rises when water is thrown on the hot stones, along with the cooling, the rest and the company.

In everyday use the word covers different things: the dry sauna at a club, the steam room in an apartment building, the infrared cabin, and sometimes any warm space inside a spa. This guide separates the formats, explains what a sauna is actually for, and shows where the evidence ends.

What a sauna is

The Finnish sauna is a wood-lined room heated by an electric or wood-fired stove. Stones on the heater store heat. When water hits them they produce a short surge of steam, the löyly. Air temperature tends to be high and average humidity stays low between one ladle of water and the next.

Bathing does not happen only while you are sitting on the bench. It includes the shower beforehand, the passage through heat, the cooling and the rest. The Finnish Sauna Society treats calm, respect for other people and the freedom to leave as parts of the culture. Competing to see who can take the most heat runs against that logic.

Dry sauna, steam sauna and infrared

All three heat the body, but they do not create the same experience.

In common speech, “steam sauna” is a perfectly understandable phrase. Technically it is closer to a steam room than to a Finnish sauna. The difference matters for the build: wood, waterproofing, ventilation, drainage and heat source all change from one system to the other.

What a sauna is for

The most direct function is to offer heat, a pause and a social practice. You sweat, feel the muscles let go, break the routine and spend a few minutes not doing anything else. That lived effect does not have to become a medical claim to be worth something.

There is research on possible cardiovascular, respiratory and recovery effects, mostly for regular dry sauna use. A 2018 systematic review gathered 40 studies with 3,855 participants and found potentially favourable results. The review itself asks for caution: only 13 studies were randomised trials, many had fewer than 40 participants, and the protocols varied widely.

In other words, the literature is promising, but it does not license turning the sauna into a universal treatment. Frequency, temperature, duration and health status all change the result. Studies on dry sauna also do not automatically prove the same things for steam or infrared.

Sauna benefits: what can be stated

For a healthy person, a session produces predictable immediate responses: a rise in skin temperature, an increased heart rate, dilation of peripheral vessels, and sweating. Many people report relaxation and a sense of rest after the cycle.

What still calls for care is the jump from an immediate response to a long-term promise. An association between frequent sauna use and certain health outcomes does not, on its own, show that the sauna caused the benefit. Habits, physical activity, income, social contact and other factors may be part of the result.

Some popular claims are especially fragile:

  • “Sauna detoxifies.” Sweat helps control temperature. The liver and kidneys remain the body’s main systems for processing and eliminating substances.
  • “Sauna makes you lose weight.” The scale can drop right afterwards from water loss. That returns with hydration and is not meaningful fat loss.
  • “The hotter the better.” More heat means more thermal stress. It does not turn the session into a more effective treatment.
  • “Sauna replaces exercise.” Heart rate may rise, but sitting in heat does not reproduce the muscular and metabolic adaptations of physical activity.

How to use a sauna for the first time

There is no universal stopwatch. Your body, the temperature and the height of the bench matter more than hitting a mark.

  1. Shower before going in and dry off.
  2. Start on a lower bench, where the air is usually less hot.
  3. Stay 5 to 10 minutes on the first round, or less if you feel uncomfortable.
  4. Leave slowly, get some air, take a cool shower or simply rest.
  5. Drink water and wait for your breathing to settle.
  6. Repeat only if you feel well.

Dizziness, nausea, headache, palpitations or the sense that you might faint are signals to get out. The session is not an endurance test. Someone who stays for less time has not had a “worse” sauna.

How long to stay

The 8 to 15 minute range comes up often because it fits a comfortable session for many adults, but it should not work as a rigid target. Temperature, humidity, acclimatisation and individual conditions change tolerance a great deal.

If you are starting out, do a short round and see how you feel during the rest. Sitting lower reduces exposure. Lying down increases the body area in contact with hot air and calls for care when getting up, since the change of position can cause dizziness.

Who should be more careful

Intense heat dilates vessels and temporarily changes heart rate and blood pressure. The American Heart Association advises people with high blood pressure to talk to a health professional when in doubt, to avoid abrupt alternation between sauna and cold water if blood pressure is elevated, and not to mix alcohol with sauna.

Anyone with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, a history of fainting, difficulty regulating temperature, a pregnancy, or medication that affects blood pressure, heart rate or sweating should get individual advice before a session. Fever, dehydration and recent alcohol are also reasons to postpone.

Dry or steam: which to choose

For a visit, the choice is mostly sensory. The dry sauna offers hotter air, wood and löyly. Steam wraps the body in continuous humidity and often feels intense even at a lower temperature. Try both without using discomfort as a measure of quality.

For a build, the decision is technical and financial. A dry sauna needs suitable timber, insulation, a heater, stones and properly resolved ventilation. A steam room requires rigorous waterproofing, drainage, washable surfaces, a generator and condensation control. The cost of the equipment is only part of the budget.

A sauna is for heating up, pausing, being with other people and organising a bathing ritual. The possible health effects deserve research and precise language. The value of the experience does not depend on promising more than the data shows.
